The Hobbit

Part Two: The Journey

Out of the Frying-Pan into the Fire

Chapter Summary

In this chapter, Bilbo Baggins and the company of dwarves find themselves in a precarious situation after narrowly escaping capture from the goblins in the Misty Mountains. The tension from their recent escape is palpable as they navigate the dark, perilous tunnels that had previously trapped them. With the goblins hot on their heels, the group is forced to flee into the wilderness, where they hope to find safety.
As they emerge from the mountains, the adventurers find themselves in the light of day, relieved to be free from the confines of the goblin lair. However, their respite is short-lived. The group quickly discovers that danger is not behind them, as they are soon pursued by Wargs, the fierce wolf-like creatures that serve as allies to the goblins. The Wargs are known for their viciousness and are determined to hunt down the dwarves and Bilbo.
In a moment of quick thinking, Gandalf the wizard uses his magic to protect the group. He cleverly instructs the dwarves to climb up into the trees to evade the Wargs. This act of climbing to safety showcases the resourcefulness that is becoming a hallmark of Bilbo’s character, even as he struggles with feelings of inadequacy compared to his more experienced companions.
Once in the trees, the company watches in horror as the Wargs gather beneath them, howling and seeking a way to ferret them out. The situation appears dire, but Gandalf hatches a plan. He uses his magic to ignite the Wargs' fur, setting them ablaze and driving them away. This act not only saves the group but also demonstrates Gandalf's powerful capabilities as a wizard and leader.
As the Wargs flee, the adventurers are not out of danger yet. The chaos attracts the attention of the goblins, who come to investigate the sounds of the Wargs. Realizing that they need to find another means of escape, the group remains hidden in the trees, observing the goblins as they pass below. The chapter highlights the constant danger that surrounds Bilbo and the dwarves, emphasizing the themes of survival and teamwork.
Eventually, the chaos subsides, and the group makes their way down from the trees. They are met by a friendly band of wood elves, who aid them in their escape. However, this encounter leads to further complications, as the elves have their own agendas and relationships with the goblins. The chapter ends on a note of anticipation, as Bilbo and the dwarves are propelled deeper into the heart of the wilderness, their journey becoming ever more perilous yet exciting.
This chapter serves as a pivotal moment in Bilbo's journey, where he begins to embrace his role within the group and confront the dangers that lie ahead. It encapsulates the themes of bravery, friendship, and the ongoing struggle against malevolent forces that permeate the story.
