Wuthering Heights
Part One
Chapter 1
Chapter Summary
In the opening chapter of Wuthering Heights, Mr. Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange, introduces himself. Seeking to familiarize himself with the local area, he decides to visit Wuthering Heights, the nearby estate owned by Heathcliff. Lockwood describes his first impressions of the moorland environment, emphasizing its wild and rugged beauty. Upon arriving at Wuthering Heights, he is greeted by a pack of hostile dogs, which sets an ominous tone for his visit.
As Lockwood enters the house, he encounters a rather inhospitable atmosphere. The interior is stark and unwelcoming, reflecting the isolation of its inhabitants. He finally meets Heathcliff, the owner of the estate, who is depicted as a dark and brooding figure. Lockwood's initial perception of Heathcliff is that of a man who possesses a fierce and intimidating demeanor. Their interaction is terse; Heathcliff's responses are curt and uninviting, leaving Lockwood feeling uncomfortable and unwelcome.
Lockwood attempts to engage Heathcliff in conversation, but the latter's aloofness only magnifies the sense of isolation that pervades the estate. The mood is further compounded by the presence of the other household members, who seem to share Heathcliff's surly disposition. Lockwood observes the peculiarities of the household, noting the strange behavior of the servants and the overall air of hostility that surrounds the place.
The chapter concludes with Lockwood reflecting on his visit. He finds Wuthering Heights to be a place of stark contrasts—both beautiful and desolate, filled with a sense of lingering darkness. Despite the inhospitable welcome, he is intrigued by Heathcliff and the atmosphere of the estate. This initial encounter sets the stage for the complex relationships and tumultuous history that will unfold throughout the novel, hinting at the themes of love, revenge, and the power of the past that are central to the story. Lockwood's bewilderment and unease foreshadow the tumultuous events that will ensue, establishing the tone for the narrative that follows.
