The Hobbit
Book III: On the Doorstep
The Clouds Burst
Chapter Summary
In this chapter, tensions reach a boiling point as the various factions converge on the Lonely Mountain, each with their own agendas regarding the treasure hoard left behind by Smaug. The dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, are firmly entrenched in their claim over the mountain and its riches, while the elves and men, led by Bard the Bowman and the Elvenking, respectively, approach with their own interests in mind. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation, and the chapter opens with the growing unease among the assembled groups.
A parley is suggested, but Thorin refuses to share any of the treasure, believing it is his birthright to reclaim what was once his ancestors'. He becomes increasingly obstinate, driven by the desire to fulfill his quest and reclaim his kingdom. Meanwhile, Bilbo Baggins, who has been a voice of reason throughout the journey, recognizes the brewing conflict and the need for unity in the face of a common enemy. He feels the weight of the Arkenstone, the gem that represents the rightful kingship of Thorin and the desire for peace among the factions.
As negotiations break down and tempers flare, the situation escalates. Suddenly, the ominous sound of distant thunder becomes apparent, signaling the approach of goblins and wargs, who have banded together to attack the mountain and claim the treasure for themselves. This unexpected turn of events forces the dwarves, elves, and men to temporarily set aside their differences and unite against the greater threat encroaching upon them.
The ensuing battle is chaotic and intense. The goblins, fierce and ruthless, launch their attack, and the wargs, savage wolf-like creatures, add to the chaos. In the heat of the moment, Bilbo is separated from his companions, and the reader witnesses the chaos of war through his eyes. Despite the fear and confusion, the previously divided groups fight valiantly side by side. They utilize their unique strengths: the dwarves’ resilience and craftsmanship, the elves’ agility and archery skills, and the men’s determination and courage.
In the midst of battle, Bilbo’s role becomes crucial as he uses his cunning to help coordinate the efforts against the goblins. His previous experiences and the lessons learned throughout their journey come to the forefront as he navigates the battlefield. The tide of the battle begins to shift as they manage to fend off the initial wave of the goblin army.
As the battle rages on, the chapter culminates in a climactic moment where the unity forged in the face of adversity begins to take root. The dwarves, elves, and men realize that their survival depends on cooperation, and they momentarily put aside their greed and grievances. Together, they face the goblins with newfound resolve. The chapter ends on a note of uncertainty but also hints at the possibility of reconciliation among the factions, setting the stage for the resolution of both the external and internal conflicts that have driven the narrative thus far.
